"Everything in the gallery began with walking out by myself into the wilds," says Hicks. "But the truth is I rush back to a studio and quickly mark what I've seen on walls covered in paper, to set it in my mind and allow little seeds of ideas to grow."

Hicks' work is an opera in texture, catching the innate and primal atmosphere around her subject matter. The show opening this week at Tayloe Piggott Gallery, "Marks on the Wall," presents a selection of straw and plaster sculptures with two-dimensional backdrops.

A selection of Hicks' charcoal drawings depicting gallant and humanized animals and will also be included in the exhibit.
